The New Year is traditionally a time to get a fresh start, make changes for the better and plan for the future.
And all that stuff.
The Plans We Make
We all know the goals we set may or may not be reached and the changes we truly want to see in our lives feel unattainable, no matter how hard we try.
But change doesn’t happen unless we make it happen.
So, every year we make New Year’s resolutions that we hope we can stick to and by the end of the year, we hope we’ve achieved at least parts of them.
The real question is, how do we get from goals to achievements?
First, You Commit
Once you decide what you want to achieve, you make the commitment to do it.
But that’s not enough to get it done.
Having a nebulous idea of what you want to do is great, but it can become overwhelming if you don’t know where to start.
Instead of making a great, grand and glorious statement like, “I’m going to run a marathon this year,” make that statement and have smaller goals to go with it. For example, “In January I will run X miles every day. In February I will increase that by X miles.”
That way you’re gradually building up to your ultimate goal with smaller ones and it feels more achievable.
Then You Start Doing
This is the complicated part in my opinion. Getting yourself to do the small steps you’ve committed to.
The claim is that it takes 28 days to create a habit, meaning to get used to doing something every day. I’m sure that number varies from person to person and habit to habit.
I have to set reminders in my phone to make sure I achieve my small steps. And honestly, there are days and weeks that doesn’t work either.
Life happens.
Be kind to yourself when life happens so it’s easier to get back to achieving those small steps when you’re ready.
The good thing is, when you do achieve those small steps, there’s a certain amount of mental patting yourself on the back. Hopefully that’s enough reward to make you want to do it again the next day.
So, What Are Your Goals for the New Year?
This is the question everyone asks around this time of year.
Honestly, I’ve had years where my answer is “survive until next year.” In my opinion, this is a perfectly good answer, depending on what’s going on in your life.
This year has been better, overall.
I’ve settled myself in a new place and I’ve got work coming in regularly, all of which I’m thankful for.
My goals for the new year are to teach a new course on writing email sequences for lead generation and sales, to teach my list building course again, and to start a membership for people who want help with both of these.
Yes, I’ve already broken it down into smaller pieces. You’ll find out more about those pieces as I go along.
What about you?
What are your goals for the New Year?
What awesome things are you planning to transform your business?
Are you creating a new product you’ll need to launch?
Are you setting up to bring in new customers?
Or are you having a year where you’ll be happy to have a business by the end of the year? (That’s the “survive until next year” bit I mentioned earlier.)
All of these things are valid goals for your new year, as are whatever goals you make for yourself.

I hope you have a wonderful New Year’s Eve celebrating with friends and family. Or curled up with a glass of bubbly on the couch by yourself, if that’s what you prefer.
May the New Year bring you the change you want to see.
Happy New Year from me and Irusan.
