When was the last time you got a real welcome from a business?
You know, the kind where you were made to feel special, like you were already part of a family or community. Where you walked in and felt so at home, you knew straight away that you’d be back again and again?
Perhaps it was when you went to a fancy restaurant and the wait staff pulled out the chair for you and your dining partner(s) while offering you a complimentary drink and appetizer.
Or maybe it was when you walked into a shop that sold supplies for your favorite hobby and the staff asked you about your latest project, then directed you to exactly what you needed to complete it.
Or even when you walked into your favorite local café and the barista immediately handed you a cup of your favorite drink, hot and steaming, saying “I saw you come in, so I made your regular order.”
For me, it was the first time I arrived at the resort in Mexico that I am vacationing at right now. Yes, I am writing this issue of the Email Marketing Ecosystem Newsletter while on vacation. What can I say, I believe in consistency.
This is one of those all-inclusive resorts and I am lucky enough to have a friend who is a member, so I get to use their member benefits.

My Very First Welcome
I was picked up at the airport by a fancy limo service and whisked away to the resort. The limo driver offered me something to drink after my long flight and asked how my trip had been. We chatted as he drove me to the resort and before I knew it, we were being ushered through the check-in gate.
The driver dropped me off at the reception center, where my bags were unloaded and tagged to be taken to my rooms. Meanwhile, I was ushered into the exclusive members registration office.
There I was handed a glass of champagne and offered something to eat. The membership representative welcomed me, confirmed my room requests and my food restrictions. Then they gave me a quick run through of the many amenities the resort has to offer and asked if there was anything additional I needed.
Once that was complete, a golf cart with a very sweet and friendly driver took me and my bags to my fancy rooms, where I found a chilled bottle of champagne and some sweets awaiting my arrival.
Shortly after I had settled in, one of the resort butlers stopped by to see if I needed anything and helped me confirm my dinner reservation for the evening.
Now that’s a fantastic welcome!
I felt thoroughly pampered and right at home.
Everything this company did said, “Welcome, we want you here and you’re in the right place.”
Obviously, I enjoyed the experience so much I am here again for the fourth time, and I had the same welcome upon my arrival.

You Can Recreate a Virtual “VIP Welcome” for Your Business
This is the same type of welcome you can, and should give your new subscribers when they join your email list.
You want them to know that you appreciate them and you want them to feel welcome in your community. That way, they know they’re in the right place to solve the problem that’s been frustrating them.
And you can do all of this in your email welcome sequence.
“What’s an email welcome sequence?” I hear you mutter under your breath.
It’s the very first set of emails you send to your new subscribers.
And yes, you read that correctly. I did say “set of emails.”
Why?
Because just like you would welcome someone into your home, or like my lovely vacation resort welcomed me to my home away from home for the week, you want your new subscribers to have that same comfortable feeling.
Your email welcome sequence is a series of steps, or touches, to bring your new subscribers into your community, show them around, and make them feel truly welcome.
You may remember the first few emails you received when you joined my email list.
You got your first email right away, delivering one of a few options, depending on when and how you joined my list:
- My list of 30 Subject Lines to Keep Your Subscribers Opening and Reading Every Email.
- A content upgrade specific to a blog post you read.
- A welcome right after you signed up for the Email Marketing Ecosystem newsletter.
Either way, that first email was step number one in my email welcome sequence.
It welcomed you to my community and asked you to whitelist my email address, so you could continue receiving emails from me. Then, it showed you around a bit, and told you what would happen next.
Specifically, that you’d get a few more emails from me over the next few days, then you’d receive new issues of the Email Marketing Ecosystem newsletter every Thursday. (If you’ve been on this list for a while, you’d have gotten a slightly different version of this.)

What to Do (and Not Do) with Your Email Welcome Sequence
Most businesses only send this first email.
If you’re lucky, they send a second before they start barraging you with emails that scream, “buy my stuff buy my stuff.”
Companies that go to the trouble of creating a full email welcome sequence show that they’re happy to have a new subscriber, they understand the frustration they may have in solving their problem, and they’re here to help.
Believe it or not, this email sequence is pretty simple to write and set up.
I just told you everything that goes into the first email.
Next Thursday, I’ll show you how to write more of these emails, so watch for next week’s issue.
If you want specific instructions, including templates for all of these emails… as well as tips on how to make your emails even more compelling… and a full review of your email welcome sequence…
I’ve got all of that ready for you in The Perfect Email Welcome Sequence.
I make it as easy as possible for you to write, load, and automate this sequence, so you can start welcoming your new subscribers with the same warmth, familiarity, and support that you felt with every quality experience you’ve ever had.
