Have you ever arrived at a meeting or a party where everyone already knew each other and no one bothered to introduce themselves to you?
Take a moment to remember what that was like, if you’ve had this experience. Or if you haven’t, think about how you would react. It would be kind of weird, right? Like everyone there just assumed you knew everyone else, because they did, so you should fit right in.
Yeah… No…
Some people are really good at inserting themselves into a conversation and making friends quickly. I confess, I tend to be one of those people.
But most of us would feel out of place, uncomfortable and unwelcome.
If you recall from last week’s Email Marketing Ecosystem newsletter, the way you welcome your new email subscribers matters a lot to your bottom line. How you approach this relationship sets the stage for what happens next.
Do your new email subscribers feel like they’re part of the community and want to stay to become customers? Or do they feel like that person who knows absolutely no one at the party, out of place, uncomfortable and unwelcome?
You, as the business owner and person sending the emails, are solely responsible for establishing this relationship. No pressure…

Showing Your New Email Subscribers Around
Last week, I talked about how to welcome your new email subscribers to your list. I even gave you the specifics for the first email I recommend that you send.
This week, I want to walk you through the rest of what I refer to as the Perfect Email Welcome Sequence.
Think about this party scenario again.
If you’ve been invited to a party, presumably you’ve met someone there at least once, probably the host. The host’s job is to introduce themselves, show you around, give you the “nickel tour” and make you feel welcome.
That’s also the job of your second email.
You want to write this email as though you’re having a friendly conversation with your new subscriber.
I use this email to talk about what I do, how I help my customers, and to share a bit about myself.
I talk about everything from my former career as a Renaissance Festival performer to my general geekiness and my cats.
Why?
Because I want you to know who you’re dealing with when you join my list.
I want you to see that I really do know what I’m talking about when it comes to email marketing, and specifically writing nurture emails.
And I want to prepare you for Star Wars references, silly puns, and the occasional cat picture.
Then, I offer you the chance to tell me a bit about yourself.
You know, just like you would in any introductory conversation.
I include a link to a short survey where you can tell me about why you joined my list, and share your greatest frustration or challenge regarding nurture emails.
I also say, “or you can just reply to this email.”
Yes, people reply and they do fill out the survey.
And I am greatly appreciative when they do!
I get some great insights into who is on my list, what they’re up against, and what’s holding them back from making money from their email list.
Which I can then turn into fodder for emails, blog posts, and new courses or products.
That’s the whole point of introducing yourself and making your new subscribers feel welcome. You genuinely get to know each other, so you can help each other out.
Once you’ve done that, you can…

Position Yourself as the Trusted Expert
Think about what happens when you meet someone, especially if they ask you, “So, what do you do?”
Do you talk passionately about your business?
Do you explain complex theories and break down ideas?
Do you show someone how to solve a problem they’re having because solving this problem happens to be your “thing”?
All of those are totally valid, by the way. I do them too.
And yes, I confess that I get a bit overexcited about email marketing when I meet new people, especially if they bring it up.
However, showing your expertise to your new email subscribers can be just this easy.
You probably have some sort of proof of your expertise out there in the world.
This can be anything from a podcast interview to a blog post you wrote, to an article written about you and your business.
And this proof is the perfect way to show your new subscribers that you know what you’re doing and can help them solve their problem.
All you have to do is direct them to this proof.
Which is exactly what you do in the 3rd email in your email welcome sequence.
This is the shortest, and easiest email in this sequence to write, in my opinion. And it leads nicely into…

Your New Email Subscribers’ First Chance to Become Customers
The whole point of having an email list is to make more sales.
I will repeat as often as I need to, so it’s clear.
And apparently, I need to repeat it because I talk to business owners who don’t believe this.
They think it’s just a good way to stay in touch with their current and potential customers, but never actually send a single sales message or offer. They seem to think people will just magically make purchases if they know a business exists.
I am very sorry to burst your bubble, if this is also your belief but no one will buy your product or service if they have no idea what it is or how/where they can buy it.
I will now address this whole “making the sale” issue that can be so very scary to some business owners.
Because if you’re not making any sales, you’re not really in business.
This isn’t my opinion, it’s the IRS’s. According to them, if you’re not making a certain amount every year, you have an expensive hobby, not a business.
Which is why I recommend you give your new subscribers a chance to buy your product or service in your 4th email.
I’m going to be completely honest here. Between last week’s issue and this one, I’ve given you everything you need to write your own email welcome sequence. You can take what you’ve read here and go set this up right now.
