Did you know there’s money that may be going missing in your business?
That’s a fabulous thing for any business owner to hear. “Wait, there’s money that I’m missing, that I shouldn’t let disappear? Where can I find it?”
That money is in your email list.
If you haven’t been emailing your subscribers regularly, that’s where you’re missing out. Your potential customers are disappearing and taking their money with them.
Email Isn’t Going Anywhere
I hear this all the time:
“Oh, I’m doing more on social media because no one checks their email.”
Or…
“Yeah, I had an email list, but I stopped emailing them ages ago and I’m just going to let that go and start over.”
Or…
“I’m only going to use social media and ads to get customers.”
That is a huge mistake.
Your email list is one of the most valuable assets you have in your business.
According to ExactTarget, for every $1 you spend on email marketing, the average return on investment (ROI) is $44.25.
According to the Direct Marketing Association, 66% of consumers have made a purchase online as a direct result of an email marketing message.
So why are you ignoring your email list?
Again, huge mistake.
First, you spent a ton of money, time and effort building that email list. Even if all you spent was time and effort, that time and effort didn’t go into other aspects of your business. So yes, it cost you money.
Second, when you send someone an email, your message goes directly into their inbox. You don’t get that with social media or ads.
It’s the difference between someone opening their front door after you knock and saying, “Yeah, what do you want” through the screen, and them opening that door to invite you into their living room.
Because once they give you permission to enter their inbox, it’s much more likely that they’ll open your emails, read your message and take the action you want them to take.
Whereas, on social media, people are scrolling through all the stuff in their feeds. They’re paying more attention to their friends’ cute kitten and puppy pictures than they are to anything you post.
It’s the same with ads. They get lost in the scroll. Or, if you put ads in the Google Display Network or something similar, your ads are popping up while someone is trying to read an article or watch a video. They don’t want to pay attention to you, they want whatever it was they came there to see.
If your subscribers find an email in their inbox from you, someone they want to hear from regularly, they’re much more likely to pay attention to it. Which means your email will get opened, read, and acted on.
Don’t get me wrong, you should be posting on social media for your business and you should be running ads when you’re selling products and services.
But you’re better off using both of those methods to grow your email list. Then, you’ll have direct access to your potential customers.
However, you must keep emailing them, because then they’ll remember who you are, what it is that you do and why they were interested in your product or service to begin with.
Why It’s So Easy to Let Your Email List Fall by The Wayside
So many people tell me that they don’t know what to write or no one opens their emails. They don’t feel like the effort they’re putting into their email lists is getting them any results.
Instead of making an effort to fix the problem, they stop writing to their subscribers. Which means their email lists become useless because their subscribers aren’t engaged anymore.
Again, a huge waste of money, time and effort.
Trust me, I understand the problem.
Coming up with something to say every day, week or even every month can be exhausting.
I hate staring at a blank page just as much as everyone else.
But it’s worth it.
Because it’s not about the struggle to put words on the page. It’s about building a relationship with your subscribers.
In any relationship, the most important thing you can do is show up.
In your relationship with your subscribers, you show up by sending them valuable content on a regular basis.
They show up by opening and reading that content and purchasing your products and services.
If you fall down on your side, they’re not going to stick around. They’ll go find someone who keeps up their end of the bargain. Who shows up and gives them what they want.
The most likely “person” they’ll go to is your competitors.
Don’t let that happen.
Don’t Abandon Your Email List – Instead, Re-Engage Your Subscribers
If you haven’t emailed your list lately, it’s time to fix that. By lately I mean within the last 3-6 months or longer. Or ever. (Yes, I know some of you never email your lists.)
Just like with an in-person relationship, you start with an apology.
Then, you spend a bit of time catching up and letting your subscribers know what you’ve been up to.
Doing this lets you rebuild the relationship you abandoned. It shows that you are interested in continuing the relationship, that you’re aware the failure is on your side, and that you want to make amends.
(Yes, this works, I’ve done it. I wrote a blog post about it 2 weeks ago.)
Once you follow through on your promise to email regularly and you continue to offer value, your subscribers will remember why they were interested in your company in the first place and be more willing to buy.
Because that is the point of having an email list. To make money.
Abandoning your list means you’re wasting money.
Instead, reclaim that money, re-engage your email list and restart that relationship with them so you can make more money.
