How to Write Emails that Convert Part 5: Your Call to Action

For the last few weeks, I’ve been writing a series about how to structure and write emails that convert. I go through each section of an email to show you how to make it stronger, so it gets your subscribers to take the next action you want them to take. Last week I showed you how to write bullet points that captivate your subscribers and make them want more. This week, I’ll help you craft a call to action for your email that gets your subscribers to do what you’re asking them to do.

The point of sending emails to your subscribers is to get them to do something like buy your products, sign up for your services or even read your blog posts, right?

Then you have to tell your subscribers what you want them to do.

Because if you don’t, it’s the equivalent of inviting them to a huge feast, then not giving them a place to sit, a plate, a glass or utensils. They can see what they want, but they can’t get to it.

That is the job for your call to action.

Last week I showed you why email copywriting is so important when it comes to conversion. This week, I’ll demonstrate how writing bullet points can captivate your reader and motivate them to take action.

I’m sure you’ve seen them on landing pages, in sales letters, and in emails. They’re easy to skim and usually catch your eye, just because they’re short and easy to read.

I’m talking about bullet points.

They’re one of the most useful tools in copywriting to get people to pay attention. Shame they’re poorly written about half the time.

Today, we’re starting at the top, with the subject line.

Everyone always asks, “What’s the best subject line?”

The answer is, “The one that gets opened.”

Yes, that’s very vague. But so is the question.

Subject lines come in many lengths and types. Some people say, “Keep it short.” Others say, “Make it direct and to the point.” Still more folks say, “It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as your subscriber clicks on it.”

All of that is true, depending on what you’re trying to do.

I know, I know. I go on and on about getting your marketing message right. That’s because it’s so important!

Anyone who sees your marketing, whether it’s online or off, wants to know they’re in the right place. They want to feel like you “get” them. That you can solve their problem and that you care about solving their problem. Even to the point that they feel like you care about them, even though you’ve never met.

You can convey some of that with design and some of it will be in your targeting, if you run ads.

But your primary delivery system will be your marketing message. The words that convince your potential customer that your solution is the perfect one to solve their problem.

Yes. I’m biased. I’m a copywriter. Words are my thing.

There are three key points you need to include in your marketing message to prove your case to your potential customers.
